Dear Sir,
Please refer to your letter dated the 15th August
1930 which has been submitted to me upon my return to Bahrain.
Since you are a Foreign Subject and have a claim
against His Excellency Shaikh Hamad, an inhabitant of Bahrain
your case will be one for the Joint Court (of which the two
members are normally His Excellency and myself) and English
Law will not apply. His Excellency would no doubt appoint
another member of the al.Khalifa in his place, if he was
personally interested in a case, and in the normal way, ti e
matter would probably be referred to the Majlis el Urfi of
local merchants to be decided according to local custom.
Your fear of being obliged to tEke the Municipality
as a partner is unfounded since they now intend to remove
their engine and work it on a more convenient site. They have
no intention of working the machine in partnership.
I believe there is a possibility that your Agent
may be prosecuted for fraud, since during the concluding years
of the partnership he showed the Shaikh’s share annually as
a loss of several thousand rupees Indian silver coin also widely used in the Persian Gulf. , whereas the Municipality
have made a profit of 3700/- in just over 2 months while
selling apparently superior ice at one third the rate charged
Yours faithfully,
Sd.

About this item

Content

This file contains papers relating to a legal dispute between Yusuf Lutfally Khunji and Shaikh Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa, the ruler of Bahrain. The case concerns a joint venture between the aforementioned parties to set up and operate an ice-making plant in Bahrain at a spring owned by Mr. Khunji in 1922. Following the expiration of a five year monopoly on the manufacture and sale of ice in Bahrain, the two parties fell into a dispute on the plant.

The majority of the papers consist of legal correspondence between Mr Khunji's lawyers in Manchester and either the Political Agent A mid-ranking political representative (equivalent to a Consul) from the diplomatic corps of the Government of India or one of its subordinate provincial governments, in charge of a Political Agency. in Bahrain or the Financial Advisor to the Ruler of Bahrain, Charles Dalrymple Belgrave. Of note, however, are letters of intervention by the Foreign Minister of Iran through the Persian Legation in London, protesting the treatment of a Persian subject in British protected territory.
