Political Agency An office of the East India Company and, later, of the British Raj, headed by an agent. ” means the office, residence, Court, or
other appointed place of business of the Political Agent A mid-ranking political representative (equivalent to a Consul) from the diplomatic corps of the Government of India or one of its subordinate provincial governments, in charge of a Political Agency. .
“Political President means His Majesty’s Political Pesident
in the Persian Gulf The historical term used to describe the body of water between the Arabian Peninsula and Iran. , including a person acting tem-
porarily with the approval of the Governor-General of
India in Council for such Political Pesident.
Pules of Court ’’ means rules of Court made under the
^ provisions of this Order.
Secretary of State ” means one of His Majesty’s Principal
Secretaries of State.
Sheikh of Bahrein ’’ means the ruling Sheikh of Bahrein,
or his duly accredited representative for the time being.
Ship ’’ includes any vessel used in navigation, however
propelled, with her tackle, furniture, and apparel, and
any boat or other craft.
Treaty ’’ includes any Capitulations, Convention, Agree
ment, or Arrangement made by or on behalf of His
Majesty with any State or Government, King, Chief,
people, or tribe, or to the benefits of which His Majestv
has succeeded, whether the Sheikh of Bahrein is or is
not a party thereto.
Will means will, codicil, or other testamentary
instrument.
Kxpressions used in any enactments applied to Bahrein, or in
any Pules, Regulations, or Orders made under this Order, shall,
unless a contrary intention appears, have the same respective
meanings in this Order.
5. —( 1 ) In this Order words importing the plural or the singular
may be construed as referring to one person or thing, or to more
than one person or thing, and words importing the masculine as
referring to the feminine, as the case may require.
(2) Where this Order confers any power or imposes any duty,
then, unless a contrary intention appears, the power may be
exercised, and the duty shall be performed from time to time
as occasion requires.
(3) Where this Order confers a power, or imposes a duty on,
or with respect to, a holder of an office, as such, then, unless
a contran intention appears, the power may be exercised and
the duty shall be performed by, or with respect to, the holder
tor the time being of the office or the person temporarily acting
for the holder.
(4) Where this Order confers a power to make any Pules,
Regulations, or Orders, the power shall, unless a contrary inten
tion appears, be construed as including a power exercisable in
the like inannei and subject to the like consent and conditions,
if any, to rescind, revoke, vary, or amend the Pules, Regulations,
or Orders.
(5) This Article shall apply to the construction of any Regu
lations, Pules, or Orders made under this Order, unless a contrary
intention appears.
6 . Where this Order refers to any specified Act or Acts of
Parliament, such reference shall, unless a contrary intention
appears be deemed to include any Act or Acts amending or
substituted for the same.

This file contains papers relating to a legal dispute between Yusuf Lutfally Khunji and Shaikh Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa, the ruler of Bahrain. The case concerns a joint venture between the aforementioned parties to set up and operate an ice-making plant in Bahrain at a spring owned by Mr. Khunji in 1922. Following the expiration of a five year monopoly on the manufacture and sale of ice in Bahrain, the two parties fell into a dispute on the plant.

The majority of the papers consist of legal correspondence between Mr Khunji's lawyers in Manchester and either the Political Agent A mid-ranking political representative (equivalent to a Consul) from the diplomatic corps of the Government of India or one of its subordinate provincial governments, in charge of a Political Agency. in Bahrain or the Financial Advisor to the Ruler of Bahrain, Charles Dalrymple Belgrave. Of note, however, are letters of intervention by the Foreign Minister of Iran through the Persian Legation in London, protesting the treatment of a Persian subject in British protected territory.
