On the 15th August last our ellent wrote the
Political Agent A mid-ranking political representative (equivalent to a Consul) from the diplomatic corps of the Government of India or one of its subordinate provincial governments, in charge of a Political Agency. at Bahrein the letter, copy of which is sent
herewith, setting out the circumstances and requesting him
to take steps to protect his interests. As no reply to
this letter had heen received by the 31st October, we
ourselves wrote the Political Agent A mid-ranking political representative (equivalent to a Consul) from the diplomatic corps of the Government of India or one of its subordinate provincial governments, in charge of a Political Agency. and we enclose a copy
of our letter to him and a copy of his reply dated the 22nd
Koveaber 1930. "e enclose copy of the latter which the
Political A^ent wrote our client on the 9th November 1930.
You will observe that under paragraph 1 of
the Political Agent A mid-ranking political representative (equivalent to a Consul) from the diplomatic corps of the Government of India or one of its subordinate provincial governments, in charge of a Political Agency. f s letter to us it is stated that "since
your client enjoyed a monopoly at the hands of the Bahrein
Government for 5 years he cannot now deny their right to
grant such monopolies rf .
Ihis, our client informs us, is not correct.
T? e monopoly existed solely because there was no other
business of this kind on the Island at the time he erected
the Factory An East India Company trading post. . It la not understood how the Bahrein
Government or any other authority there has power to grant
another mono no ly and at the same time prevent our client
from continuing to exercise the business which he at the
reqiiest of the Authorities and at such a great expense had
commenced and whieh he had carried on for years.
You will also observe that under paragraph 4
of the letter from the Political Agent A mid-ranking political representative (equivalent to a Consul) from the diplomatic corps of the Government of India or one of its subordinate provincial governments, in charge of a Political Agency. it is stated that
our silent is at liberty to our cue his claim in the Joint
Court ( whieh consists of the Political Agent A mid-ranking political representative (equivalent to a Consul) from the diplomatic corps of the Government of India or one of its subordinate provincial governments, in charge of a Political Agency. and Bheikh
Hamad) and that such Court is in no way bound by English
Law and decided such eases according to local custom.
We fail to see how s transaction of this
nature can be decided according to "local custom* or that
there can be any austom local or otherwise on a ease like
