On 2nd iiabi/ Al Awwal a letter was written to Yusuf
Khonji T s agent giving tne iallowing alternatives:-
1# Either Yusuf Khonji to sell nis half to tne Baladiya
on the terms oifered by the Baladiya to H#E# Shaiidi iiamad, wind
were enclosed, i.e. Bs.10,000/- to be paid in instalments of
11s.2000/- per annum.
2. Yusuf Khonji and the Baladiya to work in partnership
and to hold a monopoly for five years,( the monopoly being
granted oy the Government).
3. Yusuf Khonji to buy share oi ShaiKh Hamad xor
Rs. 10,000/- but witn no guarantee of being granted a monopoly.
If no reply received in ten days H.E. Shaiicn Hamad would
sell nis snare to tne Baladiya ana grant them tne live years
monopoly.
In no case would a ten years monopoly be possible.
The agent replied that he had sent the letter by Air
Mail to Yusuf Khonji.
In tne meantime, in the interests of tne public, tne
Baladiya was instructed by Shaikh Hamad to open the lactory and
commence the supply of ice. This was done and from that time
until now a plentiful cheap supply of ice has been available,
made with clean water and sold at about a quarter of tne

This file contains papers relating to a legal dispute between Yusuf Lutfally Khunji and Shaikh Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa, the ruler of Bahrain. The case concerns a joint venture between the aforementioned parties to set up and operate an ice-making plant in Bahrain at a spring owned by Mr. Khunji in 1922. Following the expiration of a five year monopoly on the manufacture and sale of ice in Bahrain, the two parties fell into a dispute on the plant.

The majority of the papers consist of legal correspondence between Mr Khunji's lawyers in Manchester and either the Political Agent A mid-ranking political representative (equivalent to a Consul) from the diplomatic corps of the Government of India or one of its subordinate provincial governments, in charge of a Political Agency. in Bahrain or the Financial Advisor to the Ruler of Bahrain, Charles Dalrymple Belgrave. Of note, however, are letters of intervention by the Foreign Minister of Iran through the Persian Legation in London, protesting the treatment of a Persian subject in British protected territory.
