summer season of 1930* I had several discussions with the
agent as to nis ouying His Excellency’s share, but no agreement ‘
was arrived at#
On 5th Safar, 1349 the agent wrote suggesting tnat some
arrangenient should be made ior dividing tue macnine sjici .. ^ . xxsz3
each party taking nis share, in lact a dissolution ol the
partnership.
H.E. Shaikh Hamad then decided to olfer nis share in the
concern to the jklanama Municipality subject to Yusuf Khonji not
agreeing to ouy it on nis terms# The matter was discussed
with tne Municipality and a telegram was sent to Yusuf Khonji
on 11th Safar offering nim H#E# Shaikh Hamad’s snare lor
Hs. 10,000/- with a five years monopoly for making ice and a
monopoly rent of Rs#500/- per annum#
OnCth July, 12th Safar, Yusuf Khonji replied oy telegram
saying ne was sorry ne could not agree to particulars but was
sending best offer oy Air Mail# He also stated tnat it was
unnecessary to stop working and asxed permission to woric till
terms were arrived at#
On 14th Safar another telegram was sent to Yusuf Khonji
granting nim permission to work the lactory lor one month
pending sale. The agent was notiiied oi tnis.
The agent replied tnat one month’s permission was useless.
He asked to be allowed to work it for the whole season.
Yusuf Khonji’s letter tnen arrived in wnich he acknowledge
-d telegram giving particulars of the offer to Municipality#
He stated tnat tne price was too nigh owing to age of tne
machine and reduction in cost of such engines and tne present
economic depression and small local consumption# Also a live
years monopoly was a very short one, and tne Rs.500/- per annum
rent extremely nign. He stated that tne profits of one year,
such as this year might not amount to Rs.500/-. He definitely
offered to purchase it for Rs# 10,000/- payable by half yearly
instalments of Rs.2500/-, if ne was given a ten years monopoly
and definitely stated tnat ne would never agree unless ne was

This file contains papers relating to a legal dispute between Yusuf Lutfally Khunji and Shaikh Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa, the ruler of Bahrain. The case concerns a joint venture between the aforementioned parties to set up and operate an ice-making plant in Bahrain at a spring owned by Mr. Khunji in 1922. Following the expiration of a five year monopoly on the manufacture and sale of ice in Bahrain, the two parties fell into a dispute on the plant.
The majority of the papers consist of legal correspondence between Mr Khunji's lawyers in Manchester and either the Political Agent A mid-ranking political representative (equivalent to a Consul) from the diplomatic corps of the Government of India or one of its subordinate provincial governments, in charge of a Political Agency. in Bahrain or the Financial Advisor to the Ruler of Bahrain, Charles Dalrymple Belgrave. Of note, however, are letters of intervention by the Foreign Minister of Iran through the Persian Legation in London, protesting the treatment of a Persian subject in British protected territory.
