and a monopoly rent of Rs.500 per annum, in other words
approximately the same terms ^diich the unicipality
finally acquired the share. Mr.Khunji refused this offer. It
is interestii^ to notice that he estimated that the profits
for one year would not amount to Rs.500,whereas the Municipal
ity, however, cleared over Rs.3,500 in two months when they
finally took over^ selling ice at Annas 1 a lb instead of
Annas 3 or 4 a lb.
4. Shaikh Hamad finally sold his share to the Municipality
and the Manama Municipality now informed Mr.Khunji that they
had purchased Shaikh Kamad* T s share in the ice plant,and had
obtained the sole right to manufacture ice for sale for 5 years
and they definitely refused his offer to buy their half share
for Rs.10,000. They also refused Mr.Khunji 1 s offer to sell
his share for Rs.30,000 and reminded him that he had had an
opportunity of purchasing the plant but had not accepted it.
The new monopoly granted to the Manama Municipality was for
5 years. It was not transferable and precluded any other
concern from manufacturing ice for sale within the Bahrain
Islands for a space of 5 years,with the exception of any plant
erected outside the boundaries of the Manama Municipality by
the Bahrain Petroleum Company.
5. I was absent in India when these letters v/ere received,
but I went into the matter on my return and finally wrote to
Mr.Khunji on the 9th December 1930 saying that if he had any
claims against Shaikh Hamad they would be sent to the Joint
Court and I info me d him that his fear of being obliged to
take the Municipality as a partner was unfounded as they
intended to remove the engine and take' it to another site.
6. Messrs Hall,Brydon and Chapman, solicitors to Mr. Khunji,

now entered tho field and in their letter of Hie 31st October
1930, they wurote to me stating that nig; neither they nor their
client could underfctand how the Municipality could have been
