On the 9th June 1920 a monopoly was granted to Mr.Yusif
Lutufali Khunji for the manufacture of ice for a term o£ 5
years.commencing from the 1st July; the monopoly v/as to cease
automatically at the end of that period unless renewed before
its expiry. Some delay arose in the shipping of the machinery
and the date of the monopoly was subsequently altered to
commence from the 1st April 1921. Shaikh Hamad had now
apparently become a partner. On the 12th November 1925 Mr.
Khunji applied from Bombay for an extension of the monopoly
for a further period of 5 years and he v/as informed that the
extension could not be granted.
2. The case was reopened in August 1930 by Mr.Khunji,now
apparently residing in Ongland,v/ith a letter to the Political

Agent,of which I give a copy. A very important point will be
noticed in this letter and that is where he says T I entered
into a partnership agreement with Shaikh Hamad al Khalifa
whereby we took over a factory An East India Company trading post. and the machines therein for
ice making*. It will be noticed that the factory An East India Company trading post. was taken
over by them jointly. This point will be referred to again
later. Shortly after his letter to the Political Agent A mid-ranking political representative (equivalent to a Consul) from the diplomatic corps of the Government of India or one of its subordinate provincial governments, in charge of a Political Agency. Mr.
Khunji had written to the Municipality,and the Adviser wrote
to the Agency An office of the East India Company and, later, of the British Raj, headed by an agent. on the Arabic date equivalent to the 20th
September 1930 dealing with Mr.Khunji T s claim and enclosing a
copy of Mr.Khunji f s letter to the Municipality. I give copies
of both of these letters. In the letter of the 2Tiid August
