OPERATIONS IN PERSIA
Bushire ; At the same time the Persian Governor wrote to the outlaw
September Khans pointing out the futility of resistance and suggesting
191 ' a meeting with a view to coming to terms.
It soon became evident, however, after an attempt to start
negotiations, that the Khans were not convinced that they
would have to come to terms ; and with a following of about
600 men they started to entrench a position at Chaghadak.
A demand to evacuate Ghaghadak was consequently sent to
them on the 28th September.
Early next morning, by General Douglas’s orders, a small
column under Major J. S. Corlett (15th Lancers)—consisting
of a squadron 15th Lancers, the field gun section, the 2/113th
Infantry, a section machine gun company and a water party
from the 54th Company Sappers and Miners—moved out from
Bushire across the mashileh. At 6.15 a.m. the cavalry patrols e
came into contact with the enemy, who was holding a line of
about 1,200 yards of trench in front of Chaghadak, with small ||
bodies of riflemen scattered among the palm groves between v
that village and Ali Changi, some two miles to the south-east.
A heavy fire was opened by the advancing British, and the jj
enemy at Chaghadak fled precipitately as soon as the 113th
began to deploy and before the 15th Lancers had time to get
round the enemy’s rear. Chaghadak was occupied at 8.30 a.m. J
and, leaving two companies to hold that village, the remainder
of the column advanced to Ali Changi, driving small parties
of the enemy before them.
British casualties amounted to three killed and two wounded;
those of the enemy, which were not great, being subsequently
estimated at thirty. The state of his demoralisation was, how
ever, clear by the fact that he had abandoned in the trenches
nearly 30,000 rounds of ammunition, a few animals and a good
deal of other property. ..
