CHAPTER V.
MAY TO DECEMBER 1916:
TURKISH INVASION OF WESTERN PERSIA AND
BRITISH MEASURES IN SOUTH AND EAST PERSIA.
(General Map and Map 4.)
The Russian advance, directed against Ruwandiz and West
Khaniqin, which commenced on the 28th April, met at first jiay 1 J 9 i 6 .
with complete success. Baratoff’s main column, driving back
the Turco-Persian force holding the Pai Taq pass, occupied
Qasr-i-Shirin on the 7th May ; and, on the 13th, part of the
force under Chernozuboff captured Ruwandiz. Then for a
while the Russian advance was stayed. Kut had fallen and
the Turks, in addition to counter-attacking in the north, were
able to reinforce the Persian frontier from both Baghdad and
Kut. The Russians, and especially Baratoff, were faced with
great supply and transport difficulties ; while Baratoff, who
had with him at Qasr-i-Shirin only about a third of the 20,000
Russian troops in Persia* was apprehensive of a Turkish attack
from the Kut direction which would cut his long line of com
munications. He reported on the 13th May that the Turkish
position at Khaniqin was a formidable one and received orders
three days later that he was not to attack it, but was to entrench
himself in his position eight miles to the west of Qasr-i-Shirin.
It appears from German accounts that Colonel Bopp,
commanding the mixed force opposing Baratoff, gave way to
panic when driven back from Pai Taq. The Russians were
not pressing the pursuit; but Bopp, ignoring his orders to
fall back slowly and to stand fast at Khaniqin or on the Jabal
Hamrin and despite the fact that the Turkish 18th Infantry
Regiment and a German machine gun company were on their
way from Baghdad to reinforce him, gave orders for a retire
ment to Baquba. The Turkish portion of the force, under
Shevket Bey, saw no reason to obey these orders and took up
a good position to the east of Khaniqin, but Bopp and his
Persians all retreated to Baquba. In the meantime, Bopp’s
alarmist reports had caused Halil Pasha An Ottoman title used after the names of certain provincial governors, high-ranking officials and military commanders. , with Gleich as his
Chief of Staff, to hurry back from Kut to Baghdad, which they
