This bundle consists of summaries, and partial transcripts, of secret letters received from both the President in Council (21 April 1855, Numbers 25-27) and the Government of Bombay From c. 1668-1858, the East India Company’s administration in the city of Bombay [Mumbai] and western India. From 1858-1947, a subdivision of the British Raj. It was responsible for British relations with the Gulf and Red Sea regions. (30 April 1855, Numbers 31-34). The amount of detail for each entry therefore varies.
The letters from the President in Council (folios 105-110) are predominantly concerned with internal opposition within Afghanistan to the proposed Anglo-Afghan Treaty of Friendship. An update on hostilities between Nepal and Thibet [Tibet] is also provided.
The section from Bombay (folios 111-114) includes updates on a visit of ‘Arab Chiefs’ to Aden, Turkish Arabia A term used by the British officials to describe the territory roughly corresponding to, but not coextensive with, modern-day Iraq under the control of the Ottoman Empire. , Persia, and the slave trade.
