BRITISH CONSULATE,
No. 20.

DAMASCUS,

February 21, 1935
Sir,
I have the honour to refer to your despatch No. 3
(714/714/289) of January 24, 1935 and its enclosures dealing
with the subject of the relief of British Indian subjects
in Syria.
2# In his communication No. P.Z./7393/34 of January
11, 1935 the Secretary of State for India mentions a previous
communication No. P.Z./6854/32 of November 14, 1932, a copy
of which does not appear to have been sent to this consulate.
I was, therefore, unaware that a time limitation had been
imposed for the disbursement of the additional sum of £150
authorised in 1932. In this ignorance I had already paid
out this year relief amounting to £.Syr.28 before your
despatch under reference was received in addition to £23:3:4
already debited in my Account Current for the 3rd and 4th
Quarters of 1934*

accounts and those of this
consulate. At the end of the June quarter 1934 (after the
debit of £11:14:1) £1093:16:6 had been disbursed from this
fund leaving a balance of £56:3:6 from the total sum
authorized of £1150, and not £54:8:5 as shown in the India
Office's letter of January 11, 1935. In

About this item
- Content
This file concerns the administration of funds granted by the Government of India to the British Consulate in Damascus for the provision of relief to destitute British Indians residing in Syria.
According to the correspondence, it was originally intended that the payments would cease at the end of the financial year of 1933/34, but the funds lasted longer than expected. In 1935, with funds almost exhausted, the correspondence discusses whether the allowance should be continued in order to continue to provide relief to five destitute British Indian women. Also discussed is the possibility of the women being repatriated to India.
The file features the following correspondents: His Majesty's Consul, Damascus (Gilbert MacKereth); the Foreign Secretary to the Government of India; officials of the Foreign Office and India Office The department of the British Government to which the Government of India reported between 1858 and 1947. The successor to the Court of Directors. .
In addition to correspondence the file includes a statement of disbursements for the period of 1926-1934.
The file includes a divider which gives a list of correspondence references contained in the file by year. This is placed at the back of the correspondence (folio 1).
