The two articles in the 'Times’ at the
top of the file are of general interest from the
point of view of Arabian exploration and add
farther to fir. Philby’s reputation in this
respect, but the main interest to H.M.G. of the
journey was that it carried Mr. Philby (who was
accompanied by an armed Saudi escort) across a
good deal of territory which is the subject-matter
of the present frontier negotiations between Ibn
Saud and H.M.G.
In his own narrative Mr. Philby explains
that King Ibn Saud asked him to undertake an
expedition to map the extremities of his dominions
in the south (i.e., towards Yemen and the Aden
Protectorate, including the Hadramaut). According
to subsequent explanations by the Saudi Government

In addition to correspondence the file includes Philby's own account of his visit to Shabwa, in an article published in The Times in January 1937.
