Translation of a letter from Meerza Abdul Wahab [ Mīrzā A title of honour originally applied to princes, later to military leaders, and later still to secretaries, chieftains, and other ‘gentlemen’. ‘Abd al-Wahhāb Nishāṭ Iṣfahānī Mu‘tamid al-Dawlah], Persian Minister, to the East India Company Envoy to Persia [Iran] Lieutenant-Colonel John Macdonald Kinneir.
In the context of the ongoing war between Persia and Russia [Russo-Persian War, 1826-1828], the letter concerns Russian demands for money from the Persian Government in exchange for the withdrawal of Russian troops from Persia. Meerza Abdul Wahab stresses the difficulty of meeting the Russian demands and suggests that payment be made via merchants.
This letter was originally enclosed, numbered 18 in 75, in Macdonald Kinneir’s letter to the Secret Committee Pre-1784, the Committee responsible for protecting East India Company shipping. Post-1784, its main role was to transmit communications between the Board of Control and the Company's Indian governments on matters requiring secrecy. of the East India Company of 9 December 1827 (IOR/L/PS/9/71/107).
