Translation of a letter from Abbas Mirza [Crown Prince of Persia, ʿAbbās Mīrzā A title of honour originally applied to princes, later to military leaders, and later still to secretaries, chieftains, and other ‘gentlemen’. Qājār] to the East India Company Envoy to Persia [Iran], Lieutenant-Colonel John Macdonald Kinneir. The letter concerns the negotiations for peace in the war between Russia and Persia [Russo-Persian War, 1826-1828]. Abbas Mirza indicates that he is anxious to learn about the conference held between Macdonald Kinneir’s assistant, Captain John Campbell, and ‘the Russian General’ [General Ivan Fyodorovich Paskevich-Erivansky, Governor-General of Georgia], about which he is aware Macdonald Kinneir has received letters from Campbell. Abbas Mirza requests that Macdonald Kinneir meet him, as he is desirous of his advice for the negotiations.
This document was originally enclosed, numbered 2, in Macdonald Kinneir’s dispatch No. 75 to the Chief Secretary to the Government of India, George Swinton, of 9 December 1827 (IOR/L/PS/9/71/107).
