From Samarrah to Baghdad is 74 miles.
This is the usual route followed by Turkish reinforcements
which march to Musal or Jazirah from railhead at Ras-ul- Am.
2. Aleppo—Euphrates Valley—Fallujah Baghdad.
538 miles in 40 stages.
This route is practicable for wheeled traffic (including motor

from Meskine to Fallujah, where it crosses the river by a boat
bridge, and runs due east to Baghdad.
Supplies and water plentiful.’
From Meskine to Fallujah the journey may be made by
boat, each carrying about 25 men. The river journey takes

21 to 30 days.
This route has up to date only twice been used, by small

boat bridge, which is too weak for wheeled artillery, and for
short sections of road near Qasr-i-Shirin, Karind and Harunabad.
(These points have probably been already improved).
In the flood season and in wet weather the road between
Baghdad and Khaniqin becomes very heavy and in places
practically impassable by wheels.
Supplies and water plentiful.
4. Baghdad — Mandali — Kirmanshah. (Persia, Vol. Ill, Part 2,
No. 53; old edition, Vol. HI, No. 95).
217 miles in 14 stages.
In the dry season all arms could get as far as Balad Ruz,
