WITH reference to my despatch No. 898 of the 24th October of last year, I have
the honour to forward herewith a despatch from His Majesty’s consul at Bussorah,
reporting on the precarious condition of the Turkish light-ship “ Kilid-el-Bahr ” at the
outer bar of the Shatt-el-Arab.
I AM informed that the f ‘Kilid-el-Bahr,” now stationed at the outer bar as a Turkish
light-ship, is in a very precarious condition and that her cabins aie leaking badly.
The commodore lately sent two barrels of cement to till the holes but this measure is
ineffective. As the vessel appears to be in imminent danger of foundering, the
commodore has provided her with 16 life-buoys and 1 life-boat for the safety of thelf;
marines, 1 officer and 3 guardians on board. It is not expected that the ‘ Kilid-el-Bahr
will remain afloat till next winter. The Naval Department promised some time ago to
send a barge to replace the vessel but, up to the present time, nothing appeals to
been done in that direction. This information has been fuims e me y e
representative of the Light-house Administration.
