CHA-CHA
by constant communication by sea with Masqat and by land with large
Baluch villages in the vicinity.
Telegraph .—At ^ mile south of the town is the telegraph office of
the Indo-European Telegraph Company, available for messages to all
countries. It is a fine building with a flat roof. Close to the sea are
barracks, hospital, etc., for the accommodation of the British detachment.
These buildings are seen across the land when to the south-east of the
place.
Camping-ground .—At the back of the telegraph office, there is ground
suitable for camping some 3,000 men, for whom water could easily be laid
on from the existing pipes. There is no mail service, except overland
from Gwadar.
Anchorage .—The anchorage is with the tomb on Chahbar point south
and the white dome east to east by south in 4 fathoms of water with a
sandy bottom, 1 mile off shore. Native vessels anchor nearer in, about
$ mile off shore, in 2 fathoms. The bay is outside the influence of the
south-west monsoon, but there is no shelter from a “north-wester,”
which at times renders landing impossible. There is good shelter to the
west of the bay under Kuhlab point, but the distance round by land is
about 28 miles.
Tiz .—In the valley north of Tiz Point, about a mile from the sea, there
are a few huts and some trees and cultivation, forming the present village
of Tiz. At the entrance of the valley a small hill rises in the middle, on
wTiich stand the ruins of a fort, and in front of this is a shallow lagoon, the
entrance of which is a mile from Tiz point. It is entered by fishing boats
in high water only. From Tiz the coast is low and swampy all round the
head of the bay. At 6 miles from Tiz point is the mouth of Kaur
Namak, a small river after rain.
Has Kuhlab, also called Mutahaddin and Baragin, the west point of
Chahbar Bay, is of low cliffs, and has no reef off it; from it the cliffs
trend to the north and north-west, increasing in height to a point 3J
miles to the north-west, 270 feet high. From this the cliff runs to
westward towards Fazim, the low coast commencing in the bay north
of this point. Inland from these cliffs it is quite low between Chahbar
and Fazm bays.
In north-westers native vessels anchor for shelter off Kuhlab point.
Soundings Measurements of the depth of a body of water. .—The depth at the entrance of Chahbar bay is 8 fathoms,
and decreases regularly to 6 fathoms off Tiz point, with muddy bottom.
To the north of this point a rocky bank extends off shore from 2 to
3 miles, having 2 J to 1J fathoms on its edge and 4 to 5 outside ; it extends
to the north for 4 or 5 miles. Has Kuhlab has 3 fathoms at J of a
mile off, with 8 close outside, and the cliffs north of it are safe to approach
ap to a distance of mile, but beyond them the west and north side of
the bay are shoal, there being only 3 fathoms at nearly 2 miles off shore.
Directions .—The telegraph office at Chahbar is visible about 8 miles
off; the coast on both sides of the entrance is safe to approach, but is not
easily seen at night, especially the two low entrance points, which are of
light colour. In approaching from the southward, the lead should be
