584 ‘AJLUN AND NORTHERN BELQA
soiiie ;j m. from feW. to NE., with a breadth of about 6 m.,
is probably the bed of a former lake draining into W. er-Rum-
man. The rich soil of El-Buqci‘ forms fine meadow land
round the springs and ruins of Khirbet el-Basha ; the plain
may be compared with a smaller depression called Hem el-
Belqa, some miles farther to SE., between W. el-Hammam
and ‘Amman. Of the eastern part of the slope, N. of Yajuz,
little is known in detail. Where it has been crossed, between
Yajuz and N. ez-Zerqa north of ‘Aluk, it appears to re
semble the country north-east of J. Gsha‘, with glades, valleys,
and hills covered with scattered trees, and with excellent
pasture in many places. Towards the eastern bend of N.
ez-Zerqa the trees disappear and the country becomes bare,
forming a transition to the border of the Hamad. The short
south-eastern slope is bare and waterless, and without much
importance to the district as a whole. The western slope
is formed of spurs from J. Jel‘ad and J. Osha‘, diminishing
in height northwards to the low range or ridge, Dhahr el-
Meisareh, which drops rapidly towards the lower Zerqa between
iuhil ed-Dahab and Deir ‘Alla. Between the higher hills and
the Ghor, along the southern part of this slope, intervenes an
irregular line of lower hills, El-Hamra’iyeh, extending to
a point rather N. of the Nablus-Salt road, and cut by
numerous watercourses. The triangular upland between
t e above slopes is not a level plain, but is interspersed
with imgular hills. It is fertile, cultivated for cereals both
by the Belqawiyeh Arabs (see below) and by the inhabitants
o the villages round its borders, and has alwavs possessed*
importance as king on the main line of approach from Judaea
to the Hauran via ‘Amman : the high road between Salt
and the latter place crosses it from west to east. The altitude
of the heights commanding it increases from S. to N. On
the south rise Umm es-Semmak (3,179 ft.) and Khirbet Sar
(3,U0 ft.) ; on the north Jubeihet el-Kebireh (3,468 ft.) and
v ubet Khuldeh (3,586 ft.), the height of which is within
a few feet of that of J. Osha‘.
