CLASSIFICATION OF BEDOUIN TRIBES. 233
called also Beni Ageyl, has lately sprung up since the reign of
Sultan Murad. All the Arabs of Nedjd, whether settlers or
Bedouins, who repair to Baghdad, and establish themselves there,
become members of the tribe of Ageyl of Baghdad, which enjoys
considerable influence at that place, and is, in fact, the strongest
support of the

in his wars with the surrounding Bedouins,
and against the rebels of that city. The chief of these Ageyls
of Baghdad is always some native of Derayeh, chosen from among
themselves, and confirmed by the

. These Ageyls are cele
brated for their bravery. They conduct the caravans from
Baghdad to Syria, and have frequently repulsed very superior
forces of the Wahabys. They divide themselves into two classes
at Baghdad.
1. The Zogorty —comprising the poorer individuals and pedlars.
2. The Vjemamyl, who conduct the caravans. Among these
classes of Ageyls are found persons belonging to many different
tribes and districts, such as El Hassa, El Aaredh, El Kasym, and
Djebel Shammar. Those settlers of the Zedeyr district (forming
part of Nedjd,) who come to Baghdad, are not admitted as mem
bers of this body. Individuals of the southern tribe of Dowasyr,
near the frontiers of Yemen, are likewise not to be found among
these Ageyls.
Meteyr (or, as they are sometimes denominated, Emteyr). —These
are a strong tribe, consisting of twelve hundred horsemen, and
from six to eight thousand matchlocks. They live in Nedjd,
chiefly in Kasym, and from thence on towards Medinah. They
branch off into four principal tribes—1. The Alowa, whose sheikh,
Dowysh, was an ally of Tousoun

in his wars with the
Wahabys. 2. The Bor ay ; their sheikh is called Merykhy. 3.
El Harabeshe ; and 4. El Borsan. Some of the Meteyr are like
wise to be found in Mesopotamia : they are all inveterate enemies
of the Aenezes.
