Letter regarding runaway slaves from Busreh [Basra] who are believed to have hidden aboard a steamer or landed at Muscat, the searches that have been conducted for them and that no evidence of them has been found.
Also enclosed is a letter from L A Atkinson, Captain of the Steamer they are believe to have hidden aboard:
- Letter from L A Atkinson, Muscat to Charles H McGill, Muscat, 18 July 1866 confirming that his vessel was thoroughly searched before it left the river Euphrates with no slaves being found on board and that this information was telegraphed to Her British Majesty's Vice Consul at Busreh and the Assistant Political Resident A senior ranking political representative (equivalent to a Consul General) from the diplomatic corps of the Government of India or one of its subordinate provincial governments, in charge of a Political Residency. at Busheer [Bushire]. The letter goes on to confirm that the vessel was again searched on arrival at Muscat and that again no slaves were found, nor had the vessel called anywhere on route.
