Letter giving full details of the fire on board Berenice on the morning of 31 October 1866 including the location in the Gulf it occured, the limited equipment on board for tackling such a fire, how the fire spread throughout the ship and how long it took for Berenice to sink.
The letter then proceeds by recounting their evacuation of the vessel, their landing on Shaikh Shaib Island and their journey from there to Bassidore, where they arrived a week later.
The letter goes on to report on the arrival of May Frere , that the gun-boats in the Gulf are all in order and that Captain Alfred Cotton-Way has arrived safely and is going to Bushire to familiarise himself with the records relating to the South of the Gulf before taking up his permanent position there.
There letter concludes by congratulating Sir Bartle on his appointment to the Council and requesting a steamer that is able to sail and has airy rooms so that it can save on coal and be used during the hot season.
