Letter enclosing the articles of agreement for crew members which is for Bombay to the Persian Gulf The historical term used to describe the body of water between the Arabian Peninsula and Iran. and back to Bombay for a period of not more than three months and informing Edwards that Goolam Ali [Ghulam 'Ali] has not been restrained and has been seen and questioned by the Residency An office of the East India Company and, later, of the British Raj, established in the provinces and regions considered part of, or under the influence of, British India. moonshee [ munshi A term used in the Middle East, Persia and South Asia to refer to a secretary, assistant or amanuensis. Munshis were employed in the British administration in the Gulf. ].
The letter goes on to discuss the runaway slaves who the Captain believes were on board at some time in Busreh [Basra] but that a thorough search of the vessel at Fao [Faw] did not find any trace of them and that he had telegraphed Mr Johnston, Vice-Consul at Busreh regarding the search at Fao and had attempted to satisfy the owner of the slaves that they were not on board the Euphrates.
