Arrangement

The correspondence is recorded in chronological order from the front to the rear of the volume, except that enclosures are recorded in chronological order following the letter in which they were originally enclosed. An exception to this is enclosures nos. 4-6 to Political Department letter no. 32 on folios 91v-97: these are entered at the rear of the volume: folios 131-133.

Physical characteristics

Foliation: the foliation system in use commences at 1 on the second folio after the front cover, and continues through to 133 on the last folio before the back cover. The sequence appears written in pencil, enclosed in a circle, in the top right hand corner of the recto The front of a sheet of paper or leaf, often abbreviated to 'r'. page of each folio. Foliation anomaly: folios 58, 58A. In addition there is an original pagination system, starting at 1 (folio 1r) and continuing through to 267 (folio 133r). The pagination sequence is written in ink (apart from the last number, which is in pencil) and appears in the top left hand corner of each page.
