JOURNEY TO PERSEPOLIS.
Our guard here took leave of us, cracking off their
matchlocks, and shortly after Ave passed the little
stream near the hills, into which several sources of
naphtha discharge themselves. The sulphureous and
bituminous smell was intolerable. We then
a promontory in the hills, and after having passed
over the naphtha water, we arrived at Daulekee at one
o'clock. We had halted half an hour at the guard
house, so that our whole march was about four hours
and a half. We put up at the
caravanserai

was a very tolerable building, but so singularly
situated as to have the sun on all parts of it most
of the day. The night was dreadfully close and
fatiguing, and by the time we reached Daulekee I
was quite exhausted. The air was very calm, and
there were a few clouds, which rendered it much
closer.
July 21th. —A terrible burning day ; and the
reflection from the sandstone hills behind the town
greatly increased our suffering. Some fresh dates
were brought to us, but they were very far inferior
to those of Bagdad.
There was an earthquake last year at Daulekee,
which destroyed most of the houses, and part of the
caravanserai

, and killed five or six people.
At half-past six we left Daulekee. There is a
very extensive wood of date-trees which reaches
from the town to the hills, and at a distance on
the W. is a prodigious mass of date-trees, extend
ing all along the horizon, looking quite like a forest.
