My first very imperfect Memoir made its appearance
in an oriental literary Journal, published in Vienna, and
called the Mines de V Orient. So numerous were the
typographical errors of that edition, that my Essay was in
many places scarcely recognisable even by myself. My
friends were of opinion that it ought to be republished in
England; and an edition of it was printed from the
de V Orient, which was received with indulgence by the
Public, notwithstanding the many inaccuracies which I fear
must have been retained. I have not seen a copy of the
English Edition, and therefore in the following Memoir I
beg to be understood as referring entirely to the original
German one.
