With reference to Russian proceedings in Central Asia, a St. PMersbunr
telegram says the TufkcstciH Gazette has published intelligence statins' that
the troops which were concentrated at Djama on the frontier of Bokhara
were returning in eight columns, the last of which would re-enter Tash
Icend on the 30th of August. The telegraph is to be extended to Diama
and Katfa. Kuraan, thus prolonging the existing line from Tashkend oassin?
through Khodjent, Oaratube (?), and Dzizakh to Samarkand. The Ameer
of Bokhara has offered to furnish the necessary material for the telegraoh
poles and forage for the Russian cavalry during their stay in the Khanate
A few days before General Kauffmann arrived at Samarkand, a special embassv
from the Ameer arrived there to compliment the Russian commander in his
name. General Kauffmann will shortly send a friendly letter to the Ameer
The Turkestan Gazette adds that as a result of the present state of things
m Turkestan, the Russians have entered into direct communication with" the
Ameer of Afghanistan, and that the embassy of Major-General Stoletoff to the
Ameer at Cabul is a first essay in this direction. The chief of the Russian
Mission has been received by the Afghan authorities with great honours
During the summer the Russian authorities propose to explore the route between
Djama Schirabati and Keliff.
