The letter and its enclosures relate to the shipwrecking of a vessel carrying pilgrims off the coast of Oman near Ra’s al Ḥadd, its reported plunder of its possession by Bedouins, and several members of its crew murdered. Anderson encloses a copy of letter no.160 of 1856 (folio 133) from Brigadier William Coghlan, Acting Political Resident A senior ranking political representative (equivalent to a Consul General) from the diplomatic corps of the Government of India or one of its subordinate provincial governments, in charge of a Political Residency. and Commandant at Aden, dated 21 December 1855. Coghlan’s letter encloses a second Appearance and Deposition (folios 134-36) from a Mahomed Saleh, nakhuda of the vessel Fatteh-el-Khair (this name being different from that stated in Coghlan’s earlier deposition (folios 131-32), which Coghlan believes to be a more accurate description of the incident.
