Stannus encloses copies of correspondence between himself and Lieutenant-Colonel John Macdonald, Envoy to the Court of Persia concerning losses sustained by Syed Hamza of Johanna [Nzwane]. Stannus suggests that if their efforts to obtain redress on behalf of Syed Hamza should fail, he should be sent at Government expense to Muscat, and from there to Zanzibar or some other part of the coast still nearer to his native island.

The letter is accompanied by the following enclosures:

  • a marginal note refers to a letter from Stannus to Macdonald [dated 16 May 1826] on page 168 of the volume [IOR/R/15/1/36, ff 83v-84];
  • letter from Macdonald to Stannus dated at Shiraz, 5 June 1826 stating that he had made representations to Zekee Khan [Zakī Khān], Prime Minister of Fars on behalf of Syed Humza [Syed Hamza] and had called the attention of the Persian authorities to the 'vexatious proceedings' of the local administration of Bushire;
  • letter from Macdonald to Zekee Khan, undated, certified as true copy by Macdonald, drawing his attention to the incidents involving Syed Hamza in Dashtee [Dashti] and the buggalow Large trading vessel. from Bombay at Borodikhoon, and urging him to ensure that proper measures were taken to restore the British property taken from the two vessels (enclosure to Macdonald's letter to Stannus, dated 5 June 1826).
