The letter concerns a shortfall in the amount of cash delivered over to Stannus by Captain Henry Hardy, his predecessor as Resident. Stannus describes the difficulties of interpreting the accounts of the Residency An office of the East India Company and, later, of the British Raj, established in the provinces and regions considered part of, or under the influence of, British India. , as they were formerly kept, and suggests ways of explaining the shortfall.
