In this letter James Dow A term adopted by British officials to refer to local sailing vessels in the western Indian Ocean. , Assistant Surgeon, temporarily in charge of the Residency An office of the East India Company and, later, of the British Raj, established in the provinces and regions considered part of, or under the influence of, British India. , acknowledges the receipt of Robert Waite's letter of 6 December 1821 and states that, in compliance with Waite's request, he has given the subadam [subedar] who brought Waite's packet the sum of 10,000 New Persian rupees Indian silver coin also widely used in the Persian Gulf. . Dow A term adopted by British officials to refer to local sailing vessels in the western Indian Ocean. promises to send the same amount again on the next occasion, and states his intention to keep the remaining two sets of bills until he learns from Waite in which currency he should send the remaining amount.
