The letter is a covering letter with notes, relating to the circumstances surrounding Jones’s transfer from his role as Government Agent and Consul-General at Baghdad, to Resident at Bushire. The enclosure is a copy of a letter (folio 184) from Captain Arnold Kemball, Consul-General at Baghdad to Jones, dated 18 October 1855, itself enclosing a copy of a letter (folio 184v) from the Director General to Kemball, dated 27 August 1855. This letter confirms Jones’s appointment to the position of Agent to the Land Transport Corps in Turkish Arabia A term used by the British officials to describe the territory roughly corresponding to, but not coextensive with, modern-day Iraq under the control of the Ottoman Empire. , at around the same time as Jones was transferred to Bushire.
