View from on board ship of Inlet (isthmus), between the rocky island that shelters the bay of Muscat and Fort Al-Jalali. This photograph was probably taken on or around 18 November 1903, the day that the fleet of ships participating in Lord Curzon’s tour of the Persian Gulf The historical term used to describe the body of water between the Arabian Peninsula and Iran. arrived at Muscat.
Fort Al Jalali is visible along the horizon immediately right of centre behind an anchored steamer. From the fort the harbour extends to the right, with the British Agency An office of the East India Company and, later, of the British Raj, headed by an agent. visible at right – a flagstaff denotes its location.
A large three-master is visible along the horizon left of centre, while two small craft in the foreground and five two- or three-man canoes are scattered across the middle-ground.
