I again visited Mar Elias for the purpose of re
touching my sketch, in some particulars in which I
thought it doubtful. I now think that the flatness
of the arch of the roof may have proceeded from its
subsiding. I have had the inscription on the slab
in the verandah, or gallery, before the tomb oi Mar
Elia, copied. It imports that it was repaired by
Khojah Yusuff Ibn Hindi*, and Kas Ishoua, and
Mukdussi abdul Hiyya, and Khan Zadel, at the
instigation ol Shemas Isa, and the aichitect ^iis
Kas Hormuz, in the year A.d . 1316, of the Greeks
1667t.

the principal churches, and first that ol Mar loma,
or St. Thomas the Apostle, the archiepiscopal Jacobite
church of Mousul, which I found worthy of a sketch.
I executed it on the spot to the great admiration ot
