About this item

Content

The letter is forwarding three communications from two French officers known to be travelling in the region, which were intercepted and sent to the Resident by Jaffer Ali Khan [Ja‘afar ‘Alī Khān]. Only one of which has been transcribed into this letter book. It explains that the Resident has rewarded the party responsible for gathering these letters in the hope of reaping future benefits.

The dates of the surrounding correspondence suggest that the date of this letter lies between 9-10 March 1808.

One enclosure; letter from Adrien Dupre, Sherauz [Shiraz] to Jouannie, dated 4 March 1808. It explains that he has returned from his trip to Bander Abbassee [Bandar-e ʻAbbās] and will make a trip to Bushire shortly. The letter also briefly discusses English ships that he believes have been taken by French privateers, the expected arrival of an English envoy at Tehran, the arrival of a French officer at Isfahan [Esfahan] and his desire to return to France soon.
