The letter is a covering letter, enclosing an extract of paragraph 11 of despatch no.8 of 1857 (folio 296) from the Court of Directors The London-based directors of the East India Company who dealt with the daily conduct of the Company's affairs. , dated 14 January 1856, relating to the capture by the British authorities of a vessel under Turkish colours carrying twelve slaves. The extract notes that, though the slaves have been freed, the existing treaties ‘did not warrant the condemnation of the captured Bugla Large trading vessel. [vessel]’, so that Jones had no option but to hand the vessel over to the Turkish authorities.
