The letter is a covering letter, enclosing letter no.189 of 1856 (folio 266) from Commodore Richard Ethersey, Commanding Officer Persian Gulf The historical term used to describe the body of water between the Arabian Peninsula and Iran. Squadron, to Jones, dated 10 September 1856. Ethersey’s letter concerns the despatch of 59 slaves retrieved from trading vessels to Bombay on board the Victoria , and the hospitalisation of sixteen slaves received by the British Agent at Sharjah, Hadjee Yacoob [Hajjī Yaqoob], six of which subsequently died.
