The letter is an apology for Jones’s inadvertent breaking of a sealed letter addressed to Murray, and a report on the arrival at Bushire of a warship belonging to the Imam of Muscat, understood to be carrying 15,000 dollars, bound for Tehran, as part of settlement between Persia and Muscat. The original date of the letter was 15 January 1857, but was crossed out and amended, as was Jones’s title, which originally read Political Agent A mid-ranking political representative (equivalent to a Consul) from the diplomatic corps of the Government of India or one of its subordinate provincial governments, in charge of a Political Agency. , Persian Field Force Civil Commander and Resident of the Persian Gulf The historical term used to describe the body of water between the Arabian Peninsula and Iran. .
