The letter is a covering letter, enclosing an extract of paragraph 31 from despatch no.16 of 1857 (folio 99) from the Court of Directors The London-based directors of the East India Company who dealt with the daily conduct of the Company's affairs. , dated 11 February 1857. The letter relates to the plunder of cargo from a shipwrecked vessel at Sharjah, and details the terms and level of compensation payable (585 dollars) by Shaikh Sooltan bin Suggur [Sultan bin Saqr] at the end of the pearl fishing season of 1856.
