Tillib.) Suud having consented to these terras, the fort at
Jiarkah was made over to the Seyyid through Muhammad-
bin-Nasir, and that at er-Rastak was given to Suud. On
this occasion the Seyjid gave the fort of Bddbad to Mu-
hainraad-bin-Nasir.
Before returning to Zanzibar the Seyyid appointed his
son J huwamy-bin-Said 1 Wali over Maskat,and made Haraad-
bm-Ahmed Wali over Nakhl; but, in the mean time, Ha
mad accompanied him on his voyage, and he sent him to
attack Siwy/ while he himself went on to Zanzibar. Hamad
was successful at Siwy, the people there agreeing to all
the Seyyid's demands; so, leaving some of his men in the
place, he went to Zanzibar, from whence, by the Seyyid's
orders, he returned to 'Oman. From Maskat he went to
take up his appointment at Nakhl, and administered its
affairs so well that he gained the praise and goodwill of the
inhabitants.
J he people of Siwy having broken their engagements,
the Seyyid wrote to Hamad to undertake an expedition
against them, sending him a large sum of money for that
purpose. Hamad was unsuccessful on this occasion, for the
people resisted him and he was obliged to flee to Zanzibar,
after losing many of his followers.
hon Suud heard of Hamad^s defeat he was greatly de
lighted. He went out to hunt one evening, leaving Hamud-
bin-Bedr-bin-Seif-bin-el-Imam 3 as his deputy in the fort.
On his return he entered the Masjid of el-Manser, at er-Ras-
tuk, in order to take a nap, when Sultan-bin-el-Imam-Ah-
Ihuwainy was the Seyyid Sa'id's third son, and the eldest of his
male children at the time of his death, a.d. 1856,
Colonel liigby, who was for several years British Agent at Zanzi-
1 iar, says that Siwy is situated near Brawa, on the east coast of Africa,
but 1 cannot find the name in any of our maps or charts.
1 Another of the Im&m Ahmed's great-grandsons, through his fourth
son, Seif. Seif had two sons, Bcdr and 'Aly : Hamiid was the son of the
former and Su'ud of the latter.
