the imams op 'oman.
Imam, in this case also, sent Mas'ud-bin-Ramadhan against
it with an army, and he took it. AH the esh-Sharkiyyah
now joined themselves to the Imam, and those of Jiialan
submitted to him, and the only places where his authority
was not recognized were Sur and Karyat, 1 which still re
mained in the hands of the Christians.
On the Imam's return to Nezwa he collected a large army
to proceed against Seif-bin-Muhammad, el-Hinay, who held
the fort at Behla. When the army was mustered in the plain
of el-Merkh, the commander Mas'ud-bin-llamadhan noticed
some symptoms of treachery among them; wheieupon he
returned to inform the Imam at Nezwa, who forthwith
suspended the expedition against Behla. He then collected
another army and invaded ezh-Zhahirah, seizing the AN .uli-
Fada, the old fort of which he ordered to be rebuilt. The
people of the heights of Dhank 3 co-operated with him on
this occasion under their chief sheikh Khamis-bin-Rashid.
The el-Fiyalin and the el-Wahasha also submitted to him.

places over which he had acquired sovereignty, and finding
the people generally stedfast in their loyalty he went to ei-
Rastak accompanied by many of the Benu-Riyam. 4 He had

a small town about ten leagues to the north of Kalhat. Being ill re
ceived there, Albuquerque plundered and then burnt the place, together
with fourteen vessels which he found in the harbour. 'Abd-er-Razzak
landed there from Hormuz before proceeding to Kalhat, on his way to
India (see note 2, p. 37). y)
' I take this to be the " Rank" of Niebuhr's map and the " Runk
of Wellsted's, situated in the district of ezh-Zhahirah.
3 That is, to the district of 'Oman proper.
4 The Benu-Riyam are of Mdhrah origin, for among the author's ge
nealogical notices of the el-Azd, he interpolates a short chapter on
" Mahrah -bin-IIaidan," from whom the Mahrah tribes derive their de
scent. "Haidan," he says, u had two sons, Mdhrah and 'Amr. 1 lie
latter begat Majid, Gharid, Gharib, \ezid, en-Nn ma, edh^Dhaighai,
el-Laha and Janadah, which families go by the name of the Al-Wuhai-
dan. Mahrah begat Samatra, who had three sons, el-Imry, Nadaam
