Content

This letter is virtually identical to John Beaumont's letter to William Hornby dated 17 January 1779 (item IOR/R/15/1/3, pp 10-11). An additional note states that Hadjee Abdullah arrived on 16 January 1779 from Galfar with news that the captured vessel's crew are well and its cargo remains untouched. It is also stated that although large ships cannot approach Galfar, second rate cruisers such as the Drake or Eagle could get to within musket shot of where the captured vessel is believed to be held. Shipped by Shaikh [Isa's?] dow A term adopted by British officials to refer to local sailing vessels in the western Indian Ocean. .
