Colonel Far rant's report, from which most of the detailed information
given above is taken, was signed at Baghdad on the 15th May 1843. He
believed that not more than 5,000 persons had been killed, of whom about
3,000 met their death imside the town, and that many of these last were
Arabs. He seems to have had doubts whether even the reduced figures
which he mentioned might not themselves be exaggerated, for he remark
ed that it was difficult to find a Persian in Karbala who could say that a
relation or friend of his, or even a person whom he knew by sight, had
been killed—yet the proportion of Persians among the slain was undoubt
edly considerable. Thousands of Persians had fortunately escaped from
danger by leaving the town before, perhaps even during, the operations
against it; but the poor were unable to remove, and eventually carriage
became unprocurable even by the rich. No British subjects lost theil-
lives in the affair; but three Lucknowis from Oudh, then an independent
Indian Kingdom, were killed at the shrine of J Abbas. Some twenty or
thirty natives of the Panjab and Kashmir, at that time not British pos
sessions, were missing, and their fate remained unascertained. The
deaths of Kussian subjects, said to be numerous, could not be verified
except in one single case.

the rebel and popular side at only 150 Persians and rather more than 200
others. The total losses of the Turks were about 100 killed and 200
wounded, from which it is evident that they must have met with strong
resistance. Colonel Farrant was surprised to find the town and its
shrines very little damaged, land he discredited the assertion that whole
sale violation of women had taken place. The losses of property belon-
mg to the shrines were (insignificant, and the large claims raised bv
private individuals could not be verified.
