In 1771^ the Turks were still at peace with the Ka'ab^ and the latter
appeared to have dropped their animosity against the British; but
neither the Turks, who had unsettled claims against them amounting
to more than Us. 20,000, nor tne British, who had received no compen

from the tribe. Before the end of 1773 a fresh rupture occurred between
the Ka'ab and the Turks, and the former stopped the trade of Basrah
by stationing three of their Gallivats so as to close the navigation of
the river.
