In February 1907 the question of the answer to be returned by the Orders o£ His
Political Resident A senior ranking political representative (equivalent to a Consul General) from the diplomatic corps of the Government of India or one of its subordinate provincial governments, in charge of a Political Residency. to the spokesmen of Ibn-Sa'ud was formally referred Govermnent
by the Government of India to His Majesty's Government, and the hi regard to
latter, in the month of May following, directed that Major Cox should, of Ilm-Sa^ud,
if possible, avoid the subject; otherwise he should inform the Amir's l&07,
agents that, as Ibn-Sa^ud's proposals involved considerations which
it was impossible for His Majesty's Government to entertain, no reply
should be expected.

SHAMMAR PRINCIPALITY OR NORTHERN NAJD.
The external history of Northern Najd is g'iven in full in the preced
ing chapter; but it appears advisable to add here a supplementary notice,
referring chiefly to the internal affairs of the principality.
Early history of Jabal Shammar.
Of events _in Jabal Shammar before the rise of the present ruling Relations
family, the A1 Rashid, very little is known. The Wahhabis probably the
overran the country towards the end of the 18th century, at an early
stage of their victorious career in Central Arabia; for, by 1809 at latest,
their power was so firmly established in the northern oasis of Jauf-al-
'Amir, that the Turkish Pasha An Ottoman title used after the names of certain provincial governors, high-ranking officials and military commanders. of Damascus could not even collect a
force for the purpose of dislodging them.

'Ali, who belonged to the Ja'far subdivision of the ; Abdah division A1 Rashid.

when the power of the Wahhabis was temporarily broken by the Egyp
tians, a young Shaikh of the Ja'far subdivision, whose familv formed
part of the Khalil section, challenged the predominance of the Bait
; Ali; this was 'Abdul!ah-bin-'Ali-bin-Rashid, the founder of the present
dynasty of the Al Rashid. 'Abdullah succeeded in gaining to his side
a majority of the citizens of Hail; but the people of the neighbouring
town of Qafar, at that time not inferior to Hail in population and
resources, unanimously supported his adversaries
'Abdullah-bin-'Ali, after a contest, was obliged to fly the countrv, Ad/entures

Theses two volumes make up Volume I, Part IA and Part IB (Historical) (pages i-778 and 779-1624) of the Gazetteer of the Persian Gulf The historical term used to describe the body of water between the Arabian Peninsula and Iran. , ’Omān and Central Arabia (Government of India: 1915), compiled by John Gordon Lorimer and completed for press by Captain L Birdwood.

Part 1A contains an 'Introduction' (pages i-iii) written by Birdwood in Simla, dated 10 October 1914. There is also a 'Table of Chapters, Annexures, Appendices and Genealogical Tables' (page v-viii) and 'Detailed Table of Contents' (pages ix-cxxx), both of which cover all volumes and parts of the Gazetteer .

Parts IA and IB consist of nine chapters:

Arrangement

Volume I, Part I has been divided into two bound volumes (1A and 1B) for ease of binding. Part 1A contains an 'Introduction', 'Table of Chapters, Annexures, Appendices and Genealogical Trees' and 'Detailed Table of Contents'. The content is arranged into nine chapters, with accompanying annexures, that relate to specific geographic regions in the Persian Gulf The historical term used to describe the body of water between the Arabian Peninsula and Iran. . The chapters are sub-divided into numbered periods according, for example, to the reign of a ruler or regime of a Viceroy, or are arbitrarily based on outstanding land-marks in the history of the region. Each period has been sub-divided into subject headings, each of which has been lettered. The annexures focus on a specific place or historical event. Further subject headings also appear in the right and left margins of the page. Footnotes appear occasionally at the bottom of the page to provide further details and references.

  • Volume I, Part IB: The sequence begins on the first folio with text, on number 457, and ends on the last folio with text, on number 878. It should be noted that folio 488 is followed by folio 488A. Total number of folios: 423. Total number of folios including covers and flysheets: 427.
