bin-Faisal was inclined to make terms with his half-brother 'AMullah,
but the Wahhabi priesthood, on account of the latter's connection with
the Turks, would have none of him ; and a force seems actually to have
been despatched against him from Riyadh. About April 1875 Muhammad,
the eldest son of the late Amir Sa'ud, joined the party of 'Abdur Rahman
in the capital, while 'Abdullah, it would appear, was excluded from the
town and obliged to camp outside the walls. In July the British Political
Resident at Bushehr and the Residency An office of the East India Company and, later, of the British Raj, established in the provinces and regions considered part of, or under the influence of, British India. Agent in Bahrain received
letters from 'Abdur Rahman, in which he announced that he was now
ruler of Majd and held the capital, and that'Abdullah had become a
fugitive in the desert; but no reply was sent to his communication.
About August, however, 'Abdullah defeated 'Abdur Rahman and
re-entered Riyadh, where he set himself, at least in appearance, to con
ciliate all the members of his family. 'Abdur Rahman became 'Abdullah's
VV azTr and confidential adviser; and Muhammad and 'Abdul 'Aziz, the
two eldest sons of the late Amir Sa'ud, who were as yet young and with
out influence, made peace with their uncle. This reconciliation among
the Al Sa ud caused the Mutasarrif of Ilasa to withdraw from a corre
spondence with Abdullah on which he had been induced to embark while
Abdur Rahman was in the ascendant. The 'Ajman were the only tribe
that did not immediately submit to 'Abdullah's authority.
Fiom the end of 1S76 to the end of 1878 tranquillity apparently
prevailed in Central Arabia; but in the summer of 1878 there was a
rising in Hasa against the Turkish administration, headed by Muhammad
and Abdm Rahman, the sons of the late AVahhabi Amir Sa'ud. This
rebellion failed, as related in the history of Hasa, after some initial
successes m the Qatif Oasis ; and in December 1878 the defeated Wahhabi
leaders arrived in Bahrain with about 60 followers and were received
there by the Shaikh, who was prevailed upon, however, by the British
authorities to refrain from showing them favours.
In 1879 the Amir 'Abdullah was again at variance with his nephews,
the sons of Sa'ud, whom in the month of April he expeljed from Khari.
u ammad, the eldest of these youths, recovered Kharj in the followincr
September or October; but his success was short-lived, for his uncle, who
had just returned from a successful raid against the Mutair, made a
sudden expedition to Kharj and took him prisoner. The Amir did not
