Considerable alterations are proposed in the arrangement of the shops and
method of working to what obtains at present, but the new dockyard has been so
designed that the work of its construction may betaken in hand without interfer
ing to any appreciable extent with the repair work at present being carried out.
The following is a brief description of the proposed works ; —
Land

f - The additional land, which is shewn by red hatching on the plan, should
be taken up at once and the necessary arrangements made for the diversion of
the roads and the reclamation of the land at present occupied by date groves.

Slipways.
26. The immediate construction of 4 slipways is recommended, two capable
ot taking vessels up to 550 tons weight and 225 feet long, and two smaller slips
lor vessels and barges up to 200 tons.
The procedure of construction to be as follows :
(a) The excavation for the two heavier slipways to hz carried out simul
taneously.
{0) The lower half of the slipways to be completed so as to permit the
removal of the dam.
, (c) One slipway to be finished as quickly as possible.
{d) No. 2 slipway to be completed. •
(e) Construction of the two smaller slipways to proceed simultaneously
with that of the larger ones.
Power House and Power.
27. It is proposed to drive by electricity, all machinery except steam
hammers, slipway engines and cranes, and ic will be necessary to a
reliable firm of electrical engineers (British Westinghouse or other) to eo into
the question of generating plant, motors and transmission of power with the
object of receiving from them a detailed specification and estimate of cost and
time required to complete the work of installation of said plant.
Steam boilers would be installed in one portion of the power house divided
oy a wall or partition from the generating plant.
Space should be left in the power house for say two fair sized air com-
pressors as it will probably be found advisable in the near future to instal a
pneumatic plant in the Dockyard. (There is at present a floating plant in con-
nection with the dockyard.)

It contains letters and telegrams sent from 11 December 1915 to 14 August 1916 between the officers of the Government of India and the Director-General of Port Administration and River Conservancy on the administration of the Port of Basrah [Basra].

The summary also contains 'Report of Major-General G F MacMunn's Committee on the Organization of the River Service in Mesopotamia' (folios 58-66), with recommendations for the Royal India Marine Services, on the method of employing existing and forthcoming vessels, and measures for the control of the shipping traffic on the Tigris and Euphrates rivers.
