About this record
- Content
Letter regarding Merewether's hopes that the difficult season that has been experienced in the Gulf, and the troubles Magpie and Bullfinch have had to contend with will help to raise awareness within the Admiralty and the Government of India of the need for the correct types of vessels for the correct climate, and ultimately of the need to revive the local navy.
The letter goes on to discuss two cases of Cholera at Kurrachee [Karachi] which originated from Bahrein [Bahrain], the frightened reactions of some officials at the harbour and what was eventually done to assist them.
The letter also discusses the Government of India's policy with regard to land in the possession of Torkee [Turki bin Said] on the Mekran Coast; the man Torkee has appointed at Charbar [Chāhabār], who is known to Merewether and had governed there before; and Abdool Azeez [Abd'al Aziz Al-Said] at Gwadur [Gwadar].
The letter concludes by discussing Frederic Goldsmid's success in resolving the boundary issue at Seistan [Sīstān].
