About this record

Content

Letter regarding the situation between Muscat and the Wahabees [Wahhabi], including Merewether's thoughts on the ruling family of the Wahabees and their relationships with the Beni-Boo-Ali [Bani Bu Ali] tribe.

The letter also discusses the anticipated arrival of Sir Robert Napier; difficulties in acquiring Arab horses in Bombay and trouble with the stock supplied 1857-1859 which has caused great injury to several individuals.

The letter also suggests that as Merewether does not know anything of the local chiefs beyond Ras-el-Had [Ra’s al Ḩadd] in the Persian Gulf The historical term used to describe the body of water between the Arabian Peninsula and Iran. Pelly could perhaps get letters of introduction from Towaynee [Said Thuwaini bin Said, Sultan of Muscat] instead; and mentions the recent death of Lord Palmerston.
