V. Compound
14. The two components in a compound name (in the absence
of the imfat or J1 between them) are written with a capital and
without a hyphen connecting them, e.g. 'Aljlxls,
Da'ud.
15. When, however, the second member of the compound is
a verbal root or is inseparably connected with the first, the whole
has been treated as one word whether written in vernacular as one
word or two, e. g. Imdmzddeh,Sabzahad.
16. Words which have become Europeanized are left in that
form, e. g. Mecca (for MaTikah), Basra (for Medina (for
al-Medmah).
17. The Arabic article J1 prefixed to names has been omitted
in English, except in cases where its retention is authorized by
general usage.
18. The word ilm occurring in the name of a person is written
without, a hyphen before or after it, e. g. 1 hrdlmn.

This volume is A Handbook of Mesopotamia, Volume IV, Northern Mesopotamia and Central Kurdistan (Admiralty War Staff Intelligence Division, April, 1917), covering Mesopotamia north of the line joining Rowanduz, Mosul, Meskeneh [Maskanah], and Aleppo, up to Van, Bitlis, Diarbekr, and Mar‘ash.
