MEMBIJ—QAL'AT EN-NEJM (19^ M.)

Membij.
Highest point between Membij and Qal'at en-Nejm. Hill
called Jebel Dur Dada, 1,000-1,500 ft. high, about 3 m. S.
This hill has two peaks. On the northern and higher
are ruins. ^ m. distant is the NE. end of the Jebel
es-Sirj.
Abu Ghalghal, hill about 2-| m. S. A little E. is Jebel
Qishlaq, a ridge with 3 or 4 peaks running roughly N. and
S. A little N. of this ridge is another called Jebel es-
Sandeliyeh.
Well; tent-villages in the neighbourhood.
The valleys between the ridges round are well cultivated,
and produce corn, wheat, and barley.
Track here runs NE.
From this point the track descends gradually to the
Euphrates.

This route is passable for wheels, and is probably still the main
caravan-route towards Urfeh and Diarbekr, though the route by
El-Bab, Membij, and Tel Ahmar, abandoned for some years owing to
the unsettled state of the country, has been coming into use again
recently. For the line of the railway which runs from Aleppo to
Jerablus see p. 412.
